For many families and individuals around the world, their beloved dog, cat or even budgie is much more than just a pet but part of the family, and when relocating to another country and culture the very idea of having to Part Company with our beloved companions is simply unthinkable.
Naturally looking for a pet-friendly property in Phnom Penh seems like the obvious choice. I’m sure many of you won’t be too surprised to find out that the majority of serviced apartments do not allow pets. The potential damage that could be incurred and also disruption to other tenants means that Phnom Penh has very few serviced apartment options prepared to allow pets. Luckily for you, the residential experts at Knight Frank Cambodia have put together this handy little blog post on pet-friendly properties in Phnom Penh to keep you in the know before you go.
Pet Friendly Private Apartments and Condos:
Generally speaking, it will be private apartments and privately owned condo’s available for rent in Phnom Penh that may allow pets. Usually, this would mean a guaranteed longer rental term of at least 1 – 2 years and a possible increase in deposit amount required to be held against potential damages caused by the pet. It’s also possible landlords may consider requesting an increased monthly rental rate for the life of the rental agreement in order for them to feel comfortable enough to allow a pet to be kept in their property.
Alongside the above be prepared for the landlord to negotiate additional clauses being added to the lease to protect against animal-related incidents and property damage. It’s advisable to make contact with a reputable real estate agent as soon as possible to get the heads up on which properties would be both suitable and available.
Privately owned apartments may come without the frills such as cleaning, onsite security and parking. Also apartments in renovated Cambodian properties may have less attractive entrances and certainly won’t have a pool and gym, for more information on privately owned rental apartments and renovated residential properties read our blog post linked here.
Pet Friendly Villas and Houses:
Villas and houses are generally speaking the most pet-friendly properties in Phnom Penh. Owners of these types of property are generally very flexible and happy to let you keep a pet. The downside to this is that villas and townhouses are generally have a much higher monthly rental rate than apartments, the few residential villas that are left in central Phnom Penh are very rare and command very high monthly rental rates. A lot of Phnom Penh’s former residential villas have been converted for use as commercial purposes. For the more reasonably priced you will have to look to Borey communities or locations on the outskirts of the city.
